Minneapolis Wood Floor Sanding and Refinishing

by admin on June 28, 2008

Most houses in Minneapolis have hardwood floors. Anything built from 1900-1965, which makes up the majority of homes in Minneapolis has hardwood floors. Older two story houses built in the 1900-1920s usually have 2 1/4 inch maple floors, sometimes birch, and most homes from 1930-1965, 1.5 story Cape Cods, or one story ramblers have 1.5 inch red oak.

The older 1920’s houses usually are more difficult to sand and refinish because the foundations on the houses have settled more, which has causes the floors to be un-level.

There is nothing like the warmth of real wood!

The newer ramblers with block foundations usually are more level and easier to sand. Common problems for the hardwood floors in Minneapolis are urine stains from pets, moisture damage from leaky boilers, plants, sinks, and normal wear and tear. Urine stains are very difficult to eliminate completely; sometimes you have to stain the floors to conceal the damage. Other times you can sand them out or replace the damaged areas of the floors.

Sanded and refinished floors add value to any Minneapolis home!

If your wondering if you have oak or maple flooring you can look at the grains in the wood. Are there a lot or not many? If there are a lot of grains it is probably oak; if the wood is very light, and no grains most likely it is maple. Both are good woods for flooring. Every floor is similar, but each is going to have its unique characteristics.
